I watched as you climbed a tree today
The tree was small but so are you.
You scrambled among the branches
As if exploring new and strange lands.
You gazed out through the leafless limbs
Awed by the views for one so high,
Grasping tentatively at each limb
And cautiously placing your feet for balance.
You inched your way ever higher
As I stared in wonder at such youthful dexterity
And recalled with fondness my own days in trees
So very many years ago.
But now I stand pensively by,
Agonizing over a misplaced grip,
Or miscalculated step,
Promising that I will be here should you fall
And will always be as you climb new heights.
