Salyers exhibit celebrates everyday memories in Winchester

Downtown Winchester is the host of a wide vari­ety of places, from a col­lectibles store to a local the­ater. And, until Aug. 16, it is also home to a solo art exhibit. 

Local artist Brenda Salters hosts an exhi­bi­tion at 5 Cleveland Ave. enti­tled “Precious Moments.” With pieces rang­ing from still lifes to ani­mal por­traits, she paints the things that could seem commonplace. 

“Where oth­ers saw nor­mal or mun­dane, I saw art,” said Salyers. 

Salyers, hav­ing grown up in Winchester, ties back into her native roots with her paint­ings. Even through the still lifes and por­traits, Salyers aims to cap­ture the spir­it of a Kentuckian. 

With a long list of awards and recog­ni­tion from cities all across the com­mon­wealth, Salyers hopes that her art lives as an inspi­ra­tion. Finding her own inspi­ra­tion in things found around her child­hood home, Salyers learned to rely on resource­ful­ness to cre­ate art. Utilizing shoe pol­ish, wall­pa­per pieces, and pen­cil, she explains how she was able to cre­ate pieces that drove her artis­tic ambition. 

“One of my favorite ear­ly cre­ations involves a por­trait of Jesus on a cal­en­dar hang­ing in our kitchen,” Salyers said. “My moth­er loved that out­dat­ed calendar.” 

Salyers explained that fam­i­ly was impor­tant in her cre­ation of “Precious Memories.” She describes her art as a last­ing lega­cy from her family. 

“Precious Memories” is only open until Aug. 16 and is locat­ed above 5 Cleveland Avenue in down­town Winchester.
