On Saturday, September 27, the Clark County Winchester Heritage Commission celebrated preservation. The highlight of the event, Pig Pickin’ for the Past, was the annual awards. This year, two homes, one commercial building, and three individuals were recognized for their efforts.

On the lawn of Holly Rood—where the 12th Governor once resided—under two large white tents, well over a hundred people gathered to have a buffet barbecue dinner, homemade ice cream, bid on silent auction items, and have fun listening to live music. The Clark County Constables provided a tasty meal, Raney and Maynard played some great music, I made what was said to be the best ice cream ever, Ale‑8 supplied the drinks, and so many great businesses and individuals contributed to the silent auction.

But the evening was all about recognizing the following preservationists.

  • 328 South Main Street, owned and renovated by Robert and Brooke Scates
  • 10 French Avenue, owned and renovated by Gary Hass and Brian England
  • 68 South Main Street, Amy’s Asian Kitchen, owned and renovated by Amy Rouse
  • Sandy Stultz, Director of the Bluegrass Heritage Museum, for her career teaching history, as museum director, bringing the museum to the forefront, and working to get the community involved in historical projects
  • Debbie Barnes, recognized for her numerous hours spent working with Clark County’s historical organizations, especially the time she devoted to maintaining and researching Holly Rood.

However, the evening would not have been complete without going back to the very beginning.

John F. Nunan, a local banker who participated in many local projects, was honored posthumously. His vision, dedication, and tireless commitment were instrumental in preserving our community’s history. His leadership was essential to the formation of the Heritage Commission and the acquisition and restoration of Holly Rood.

Congratulations to those recognized, and a big thank you to all who support the Heritage Commission and the preservation of our Clark County History.
