We think of writÂers squirÂrelÂing themÂselves away, sequesÂterÂing themÂselves until magÂiÂcalÂly, it seems, they proÂduce words that set them free, setÂting them apart from those who are not writÂers. Those words may have been arranged as the Declaration of Independence, the Great Gatsby or simÂply a letÂter to a grandÂchild, a lover, or you. It’s not magÂic; words come easÂiÂly or they don’t.
This is an inviÂtaÂtion to writÂers in Winchester, or at least withÂin driÂving disÂtance of our old Kentucky homeÂtown, to join us, Jeanine Lister and Bill McCann. We ask that you leave your room, leave the loneÂliÂness of your warm office, or leave that cold garÂret beneath the eaves of your Victorian home, and join us weekÂly for a writÂers’ group.
Bring your best piece of writÂing, or one you’re strugÂgling with. We believe in posÂiÂtivÂiÂty, accepÂtance, and conÂstrucÂtive critÂiÂcism. No one is going to be harsh, disÂmisÂsive, or judgÂing. We won’t allow any of that. Writing is difÂfiÂcult enough withÂout negÂaÂtivÂiÂty hangÂing over our heads.
We intend to encourÂage writÂers to write, to improve their best writÂing so that they become betÂter writÂers. Perhaps they’ll be betÂter peoÂple or will become writÂers who extoll the beauÂty of nature, or nurÂture stoÂries of horÂror and monÂsters, humor, opinÂion, and satire. Perhaps they will be poets whose words move all who hear them. Who knows what may come from our pens or yours?
Perhaps your best efforts will proÂduce a five-paraÂgraph essay for English class that is gradÂed an A, or maybe you will write a novÂel that wins a Pulitzer Prize. Or maybe you will just creÂate your perÂfect senÂtence or paraÂgraph. Or maybe you will simÂply find some peace; serenÂiÂty in words writÂten by you, instead of being shoutÂed at you.
Never miss a thing with our FREE weekly newsletter.
We are seekÂing, just once a week, to bring togethÂer local writÂers to supÂport one anothÂer, to encourÂage the creÂation of poetÂry, essays, stoÂries, plays, novÂels and novelÂlas, or perÂhaps just that letÂter to a child or grandÂchild that nevÂer quite seems to get writÂten. Journalist, novÂelÂist, poet, or punÂster, all are welÂcome. Bill and Jeanine are growÂing writÂers ourselves.
The meetÂings will be held in the Fellowship Hall at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, at 24 W. Hickman Street, Winchester, KY from 6 pm to 7:30 every Thursday night. There is room for all and all are welÂcome. The church’s comÂmuÂnion table is open for all who believe; the writÂers’ group is open to ALL peoÂple: believÂers, nonÂbeÂlievÂers, quesÂtionÂing folks, even peoÂple who are mad at the world. However, you must be sixÂteen or oldÂer. So that means YOU!
Join us this comÂing Thursday night (or maybe just some Thursday night) so that we can welÂcome you to our felÂlowÂship of writers.
We hope to welÂcome you soon.
Bill and Jeanine
