Time clicks on as it has since the beginning of time
What creature was the first to grasp the concept of time?
I doubt whatever lived in the primordial soup
of early life noted time
Eat and mate, hatch and mutate
Sounds stultifying to me
Witness the cicada; 17 years exactly since
its egg hatched and, as a larva, it
burrowed
down
into the earth.
Yet it emerges, right on time, with two tasks:
To mate
&
To die.
Oh, and to scream all day.
When did the creature that became the modern human
become aware of accumulating days and nights,
ticking down the time until life ends?
I know not how many days I have left
But I find I don’t care.
I’m not going to take up running,
for instance
with the aim of extending my days.
Apathy and loss of hope are the push of depression,
I’m sure
But I have tried all the medications available
without result
and can’t afford therapies with a 50% positive
efficacy.
