The endless drumbeat of regret

|

Estimated time to read:

1–2 minutes
Is it possible to keep a dream alive
without having it eat me alive?

The dream that I once kept warm and
soft, deep within my heart,
fulfilled.
My incredible want became credible. I lived and
wandered amidst the beautiful dream
For seven fantastic years, in which I was
daily amazed by new wonders.

Is fulfillment of that one goal, the one
that fed the hunger in my very soul…
Is this a thing that is only to be achieved
One
Single
Time?

The concept crushes me, casts naked green terror
streaking from my head to the soles of my feet.
I wake, afraid to breathe, waiting for my sweaty,
goose-pimpled skin to calm.
Orange street light creeps around blackout blinds.
A turbocharged pickup whistles past, clattering
over the train tracks.
A church clock strikes one.

Will I die here?
What if I’m stuck?
I let my dream get away, let it slip through
my slack fingers.

My worst mistake.

What if I attained my dream just once, and
threw it away?
What if I can’t find another place like that?
I don’t belong here.
I don’t want to be here.
My entire being longs to go back,
to sleep within the peace of singing frogs,
crickets, a barred owl, and a wandering
whip-poor-will, content and
With a complete soul.
