The Curry Building at 121 West Washington Street was a long-time busiÂness locaÂtion in Bucktown. Ethel Mae Curry purÂchased the buildÂing in 1945 and opened a restauÂrant she called Grill No. 1.
She was born Ethel Mae Hill in the Ford area of Clark County; she marÂried D. D. “Richard” Curry, a vetÂerÂan of World War I. He died at their home on Oliver Street in 1935. The couÂple had no chilÂdren. The widÂowed Ethel Mae showed a knack for busiÂness. Besides her restauÂrant, she investÂed in Poynterville propÂerÂties on Elm, Spring, Walnut, and Pearl (now Madison) Streets.
By the earÂly sixÂties, with her health failÂing, she turned over manÂageÂment of The Grill to Helen Gentry. Ethel Mae died of a cereÂbral hemÂorÂrhage in 1966 and was buried in Daniel Grove Cemetery.
