Ferns and mosses are prevalent in eastern Kentucky forests, often creating a primordial feel. Forest scenes can be somewhat chaotic, from a photography perspective, with a tangle of downed trees, rhododendron, and other undergrowth.
The sandstone cliff behind the tree provided a plain background that helped simplify this scene. A bit of light falling on the fern helped highlight its delicate beauty amidst the rugged terrain.
