Several days ago we had substantial rain, and the next day’s weather forecast was for cool temperatures and cloudy skies. Those are perfect conditions for visiting waterfalls, so my wife and I took a day trip to southeastern Kentucky to visit a couple of them. This one is Pine Island Double Falls in the Daniel Boone National Forest in Laurel County.
There is no sign marking its location and there’s no official trail, so you have to work a bit to get there, but it’s worth it. We had a lovely hike following a feeder branch of the main creek through a forest filled with the green of hemlock trees, rhododendron, and holly. Then following the cliff line and finally scrambling down to the creek.
The first time we visited this place a few years ago, I was in awe — it felt otherworldly. This time was no different. We had this wondrous place all to ourselves and spent a couple of hours there enjoying the solitude and wild beauty before reluctantly making our way back to the car.
