Were there irregularities in the 2024 election?

Within hours of Donald Trump being declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election, I began to see rumblings on social media about voting irregularities. Odd results in crucial counties in swing states. Reports of tampering. Vague references to impossibly large numbers of votes cast in certain precincts.

Not only did I ignore these unsupported reports, but I also actively urged people to stop sharing them. Didn’t we just spend eight years trying to assure Americans that our elections are safe, secure, and reliable? After all the allegations and accusations from the MAGA corner about the previous elections—all of which were dismissed by the courts as invalid—why would we want to open that can of worms again? Wouldn’t that be hypocritical?

So when a family member told me about some of the reports he was hearing recently about irregularities from the 2024 election, I was skeptical.

“No,” I practically shouted. “We’re not going there again.”

But the family member urged me to check out a group called “SMART Elections” on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100069050042674). So, I did. And what I found disturbed me.

The first thing I noticed was that SMART Elections has not only filed a lawsuit in Rockland County, New York challenging the results of both the presidential and senate race in that county, but that a judge was allowing the case to move forward, something that indicates at least some merit to the suit.

The lawsuit seeks a full hand recount of the Presidential and US Senate races in Rockland County. The case is now in the evidence-gathering stage, with the next court date set for Sept 22, 2025.

Still, as we learned from the Trump legal maneuvers, anyone can file a lawsuit. And finding a sympathetic judge—something they were never able to do—is still not proof of wrongdoing.

But as I delved into SMART Elections, I became convinced that this is not some left-wing shill looking to overturn the election. They don’t take sides. For instance, they have also criticized the chair of the Manhattan Democratic Party for electioneering within 100 feet of a polling location during early voting in the 2024 primary, something that is illegal.

SMART Elections calls itself “experienced, nonpartisan election security advocates.”

I’m not ready to start shouting from the mountaintops that Trump was not duly elected, or that any other election results from 2024 are invalid. But I am willing to watch and listen. You should as well. We must be able to trust the results of our elections, or we no longer have a democratic form of government. And yes, despite what Donald Trump is trying to pull off, we do still have a democratic republic—for now.
