New unified soccer club launches in Clark County

A new, uni­fied youth soc­cer orga­ni­za­tion is launch­ing in Clark County as Winchester Soccer Club con­sol­i­dates the county’s pre­vi­ous­ly sep­a­rate soc­cer pro­grams. Organizers say the move is intend­ed to improve trans­paren­cy, stream­line play­er devel­op­ment, and strength­en com­mu­ni­ty involvement.

Jacob Varner, pres­i­dent of the new­ly formed Winchester Soccer Club, spoke with WinCity Voices in a recent tele­phone interview.

“One of our main focus­es is to devel­op play­ers in Clark County that have an inter­est in soc­cer while being a trans­par­ent and com­mu­ni­ty-cen­tered soc­cer envi­ron­ment,” Jacob said.

He explained that the new club will replace two select leagues—Win City and FC Kentucky—and the local recre­ation­al league, WYSL, which have oper­at­ed inde­pen­dent­ly in the past.

“Overall, it should help cre­ate more com­pet­i­tive soc­cer with­in Clark County,” Jacob said, “because it’s one uni­fied club instead of three sep­a­rate clubs kind of all doing their own thing.”

He said prob­lems with the exist­ing leagues—including long-stand­ing frag­men­ta­tion and a lack of transparency—led to the deci­sion to uni­fy the programs.

The effort is being led by Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation, which man­ages coun­ty soc­cer facil­i­ties. Parks and Rec iden­ti­fied the need for a uni­fied league, solicit­ed appli­ca­tions, and select­ed a nine-mem­ber board to over­see the club.

The club will offer both recre­ation­al and select soc­cer. Recreational soc­cer will remain local, cost less, and be open to all who wish to par­tic­i­pate. Select soc­cer will require try­outs and involve trav­el, tour­na­ments, and high­er-lev­el competition.

Jabob said that Winchester Soccer Club aims to cre­ate a clear devel­op­ment path­way for play­ers, begin­ning with young chil­dren in recre­ation­al soc­cer and extend­ing through high school. Club lead­ers also see poten­tial eco­nom­ic ben­e­fits, includ­ing host­ing tour­na­ments that could attract vis­i­tors and gen­er­ate rev­enue for the local economy.

Registration for select soc­cer is expect­ed to open soon, with try­outs planned for May. The club is devel­op­ing a web­site and encour­ages res­i­dents to fol­low the Winchester Soccer Club Facebook page for updates.
