Welcome to Around Town, my new colÂumn about peoÂple, places, and hapÂpenÂings in Winchester and Clark County. In this and future ediÂtions, I’ll share a variÂety of obserÂvaÂtions and reflecÂtions on our comÂmuÂniÂty. Sometimes the colÂumn will focus on one theme, and someÂtimes it will be more of a potÂpourÂri of items. This first installÂment falls into the latÂter category.
Observant readÂers have no doubt noticed the buzz around curÂrent and future conÂstrucÂtion projects in town. These are excitÂing times for peoÂple who want to see Winchester grow — and less excitÂing for those who would rather preÂserve green space.
I don’t take sides in that debate because I believe smart, responÂsiÂble growth can coexÂist with preÂservÂing the countryside’s rurÂal beauÂty. I’ll probÂaÂbly write more about it in future columns, but today I thought I’d run through what we know so far about what may be comÂing next.
I tend to focus most of my writÂing on Winchester’s downÂtown revival and will conÂtinÂue to do so. But most of the curÂrent develÂopÂment buzz cenÂters on Bypass Rd and the I‑64 exits. So let’s jump in.
The bypass is hoppin’
By now, it’s no secret that both Aldi and Publix are planÂning to open new superÂmarÂkets in our fair city. Unfortunately for peoÂple who live downÂtown or on the east side, both stores will be on Bypass Road, which already has a Kroger and a Walmart Supercenter.
Aldi will open in Winchester Plaza in the space forÂmerÂly occuÂpied by Bargain Hunt. Work has begun on updates to the buildÂing, which appears to be a near-total rebuild. I hear the store is expectÂed to open this sumÂmer. With Cricket Wireless movÂing across the bypass into the plaza, Winchester’s oldÂest major shopÂping cenÂter will be fulÂly occuÂpied for the first time in decades. It’s nice to see the parkÂing lot full of cars again.
Work is underÂway to refit the old Frisch’s restauÂrant, which closed in December 2024. The new restauÂrant will be a Pepper’s Mexican Grill, which has five othÂer locaÂtions in Kentucky. So much for the Winchester Diner, I guess. By my rough count, this would make it Winchester’s 12th restauÂrant offerÂing Mexican or Latin fare.

I haven’t heard any recent updates on the develÂopÂment planned for the space on Bypass Road next to the Forest Service offices. The lot was levÂeled and filled with gravÂel months ago, but there has been no recent activÂiÂty. The origÂiÂnal plan called for a matÂtress store and — I’m not jokÂing — a driÂve-thru cofÂfee shop. There are already four driÂve-thru cofÂfee shops withÂin a mile of one anothÂer along that stretch. Five years ago, there was one.

I underÂstand the proÂposed travÂel cenÂter and truck stop approved for Paris Road at Exit 96 is still in the works. Some hurÂdles remain to be cleared, but it appears the develÂopÂment, which will include two or three restauÂrants, will move forÂward. Many peoÂple in Royal Oaks don’t seem hapÂpy about it, but othÂers on the east side are excitÂed to finalÂly see new develÂopÂment in the neighborhood.
Turning back to Publix, there has been conÂsidÂerÂable conÂtroÂverÂsy over the sale of the propÂerÂty at the interÂsecÂtion of Bypass Road and Colby Road. Previously home to a walkÂing trail and owned by the Greater Clark Foundation, it will soon house Winchester’s newest major shopÂping cenÂter, to be known as Winchester Village. In addiÂtion to Publix, the develÂopÂment will include a strip mall with up to nine busiÂnessÂes, as well as five outÂparcels. It will have two entrances: one on Colby Road and one on the bypass, across from Walgreens.
In the comÂing weeks, I plan to write more about this develÂopÂment and share my thoughts on the land sale and the resulÂtant loss of the Winchester Traveling Trail.
A develÂopÂer plans to tear down the old Rite Aid pharÂmaÂcy on Pedro Way and redeÂvelÂop the propÂerÂty. Under the develÂopÂment plan, the lot would be split into two; the Planning Commission is set to vote on it on June 2. A bank would occuÂpy one lot, while plans for the othÂer have not yet been announced.
I sugÂgest a driÂve-thru Mexican cofÂfee shop. What do you think?
