I have a love/hate relationship with the Hamburg area of Lexington. I hate that a once-famous and beautiful horse farm is now is bustling cookie-cutter version of all that is wrong with modern suburban America. I hate the traffic. I hate the confusing parking lots that seem to be impossible to exit from.
On the other hand, it sure is convenient to hop on I‑64 or Colby Road and be there in minutes.
Unfortunately, once there, you have to contend with the traffic and the parking. And this time of year, it’s horrendous.
There is an alternative. One that avoids all of the negatives I mentioned above and has many positives to recommend it.
Shop local!
The first Saturday after Thanksgiving is deemed “Small Business Saturday” in towns like Winchester all over the nation. It’s a day to learn or re-learn all that the “mom-and-pop” merchants here have to offer.
There are so many advantages to doing your holiday shopping here in our fair city.
You can avoid the traffic snarls. The commute. The big crowds. The huge stores filled with mountains of merchandise but precious few associates to assist you.
And what do you gain by choosing to shop in Winchester? A lot!
Our town is full of small shops offering a more unique experience. In most cases, you’ll find friendly owners in the stores, ready to assist you. You’ll find one-of-a-kind items that can’t be found in the big box stores. You’ll see friends and neighbors. I love the sense of community I experience when I shop here in our town.
Even better, you’ll be making a positive contribution to the economic health of our community. Dollars spent here in Clark County mostly stay here, supporting our friends and neighbors and helping to keep our community thriving and vibrant.
And while you’re out shopping and visiting, be sure to grab a bite at one of our unique locally-owned restaurants. We are blessed with several excellent restaurants and pubs.
