Five random thoughts from the week that was.
- This is actually a week late, but on Friday the 12th, my wife and I attended Rock the Block downtown (which was awesome). Before the show, we popped into the Engine House Pizza Pub on Lexington Ave., just off Main St. We hadn’t eaten there in a couple of years, and I must say I was impressed by the food and the atmosphere. There was live music from Ronn Crowder (who won me over by playing a couple of John Prine tunes, among others). But the star of the evening was the pizza. We love thin crust pizza and let me tell you, they do it right! They also have a nice selection of beers on tap. Stop in some time; you won’t regret it.
- Also the same evening, we saw the temporary street crossing art at Court & Wall Streets. It had just been completed by a group of teens from the Rowland Arts Center, who worked with the Winchester Design Studio in a 5‑week design workshop to plan and design the crosswalk. I’d like to see some permanent installations like this around town.
- Public schools opened for the new year this week in Clark County. Please watch for those big yellow buses carrying our precious kiddos.
- If you drive I‑64 between Winchester and Lexington regularly as I do, you’ve no doubt noticed that work has begun on repaving that stretch of highway. It’s badly needed, and I’ve been hoping for years it would get done. Still, it’s so inconvenient to have the heavily-traveled corridor reduced to two narrow lanes — especially during rush hour. Here’s hoping the work gets done quickly so we can enjoy the fresh new pavement before winter.
- I applaud the Winchester City Commission’s decision to grant badly-needed raises to our police officers. According to the Winchester Sun, the city raised the starting salary for police officers nearly $4,000, up to $40,325. Still — also according to the article in the Sun — even with the raise, our city will rank 16th among 21 area police agencies in this measure.
