Fulton road connector opens to the public

Winchester residents and visitors now have another route connecting downtown to Bypass Road. On Wednesday, a public ceremony was held to officially open the last segment of Fulton Rd, creating a direct route from the bypass at Martin Luther King Blvd and Fitch Avenue downtown.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at the eastern end of the new segment at Professional Avenue, was attended by local citizens and officials. Mayor Jo Ellen Reed spoke of the importance of the new road and the implications for Winchester’s future.

“This roadway is more than pavement and concrete—it is a symbol of progress, persistence, and of the vision we share for our community.

“The completion of Fulton Road is just one of many projects we are advancing as a city. Winchester is not standing still—we are building, we are connecting, and we are growing.”

Other officials who spoke included City Manager Bruce Manley, former City Manager and project leader Mike Flynn, and State Representative Greg Elkins.

The project has been discussed for over 50 years, according to some accounts. In recent years, Fulton was extended from Arlington Road to Professional Avenue; however, the last unbuilt segment, between Professional Avenue and Market Street, proved to be more challenging to complete for a variety of reasons.
