If you are a fan of the arts in Winchester, you may have seen me grace the stage once or twice over the last few years. This summer, however, I will be sitting behind the laptop as I step into the role of WinCity Voice’s first intern.

My name is Zach Ross, and I am beyond thrilled to take on the role of summer intern. Having spent most of my life in Winchester, I am excited to share stories from our beloved community.

I am from Winchester and graduated from George Rogers Clark High School in 2024. While in high school, I had the opportunity to take on the role of features editor of the school newspaper, Smoke Signals. Additionally, I had the privilege of attending Governor’s School for the Arts in 2023, where I majored in Creative Writing.

With these opportunities, I have been able to cultivate a love for writing, and more specifically, telling stories. Storytelling has always been something that I want to spend my life doing, and writing has always been like a dependable friend, allowing me to do just that.

I currently attend Butler University in Indianapolis, where I am studying acting and English. Taking a step away from Kentucky soil for schooling has really shown just how much I can miss the unmistakable beauty and the ironclad community like that in Clark County.

That sense of community is why I am so excited to be the intern for WinCity Voices this summer. Being able to tell stories that impact a community as strong as the one in Winchester is an opportunity that many young writers and journalists can only dream of obtaining.

Clark County has been my home for over nine years, after I moved here from Berea while I was still in elementary school. Being here for so long has really allowed me to cement myself in different communities around Winchester, both in the community that comes from the school district and within the arts as well.

My goal for the summer is to cover a wide variety of stories, but especially the arts. The arts have been a foundation of creative integrity in my life, and Winchester is rich with exceptional artistic outlets. Without places such as Leed’s Center for the Arts, my creativity would not have guided me to achieve the accomplishments I have, or even to begin my writing journey.

It is because of the community that Winchester has cultivated that I feel so determined to make the most of my summer apart with WinCity Voices. There is something so powerful in being able to share with each other, and I hope to share as many of your stories as I possibly can this summer.
