I write this on Memorial Day — a day set aside to remember those who sacrificed their lives in American wars. But I ask, are we not at war now? The shouts of those who scream, “I have a right” over the silence and grief of families whose children were murdered. Those who chant “second amendment” louder than the sorrow and anger of families whose loved ones were killed while simply going to the grocery.
We are at war with politicians accepting generous donations from the NRA. Politicians who, at a convention for the same organization, had the nerve to read the names of slain children and teachers. These were human beings murdered by an 18-year-old with an assault weapon. Then there are those who stand behind laws that allow an 18-year-old to legally buy a military-style weapon when he cannot legally buy a drink.
I have had enough when, once again, I cannot see the evening news because of my tears. When have we finally had enough? At what point do sensible people rise up and refuse to be held hostage by politicians who want nothing more than to retain power, and an industry placing profit over the lives of young children?
We cannot continue to do this. While the rest of the world questions why America tolerates such senseless violence, we need to question it as well. The days of “thoughts and prayers” are over. We can use our collective outrage to affect change. We must.
Enough! No más.
