Know Your Place

I was thinking about Winchester and its surrounding county. I was thinking about the places we live and how we get so caught up in the struggles of living that we forget to be aware of the beauty and mysteries around us and how our own lives can add to the beauty of that place.

Know Your Place

When was the last time you took time
to watch a sunset melt like butter
over the hills of your home?

At the place where Oak and Hawthorn meet,
At a creek named by the Shawnees,
By the deer trails and buffalo trace,
By the slate-edged dens of copperhead snakes,
is a moment moved beyond measure,
where time and situation find closure.

When was the last time you took time
to kick a pebble down the road,
lay bets on the chance of its roll.

Do not think you will find a place better.
Do not think death will earn your resolve.
What the earth gives forth, it always swallows.
This is the place you melt like butter.
