I picked up this LP when I was in high school and have always liked it. This is Clapton, Beck, and Page in their prime. I especially love Clapton’s “Tribute to Elmore,” which I first heard on the cassette History of Eric Clapton. Most songs on this album were written by Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, or Jimmy Page, and of the three guitarists, only Jimmy Page appears on every track — though not always in a lead role. Clapton was not present for the tracks featuring Jeff Beck, which were recorded with members of Cyril Davies’ band The Allstars. Likewise, Beck was not at the sessions with Clapton, the tracks from which were later overdubbed by Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, and Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones.
And so to pick up where the August 20, 2022, WinCity Facebook cartoon left off, The AllStars begat Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page begat Led Zeppelin, and Led Zeppelin begat Robert Plant. Robert Plant begat the Honey Drippers whilst Jimmy Page begat The Firm along with Paul Rodgers, who was begotten from Free and Bad Company. Meanwhile, Jeff Beck begat the Jeff Beck Group along with Rod Stewart, who begat Faces and on and on. Please don’t get me started on Eric Clapton.
Have a listen, I think you’ll enjoy it.
