On a recent trip to California, my wife and I enjoyed several days of driving through and hiking in the foothills around San Francisco. California has experienced much higher than normal amounts of rain and record snowfall this winter. We experienced the wet weather during our excursions.

The foothills were a beautiful vibrant green; they were especially striking when the sun could illuminate them through breaks in the clouds.

This winter’s precipitation there will go a long way toward replenishing the reservoirs and relieving the drought conditions. However, critically low water tables due to decades of pumping water out of the ground to support development and agriculture won’t be alleviated by a single wet winter. Water access and use will likely remain a critical issue for years to come, not just in California but throughout many western states.
