I have been a vocal supÂportÂer of the so-called High Side project since it was first proÂposed. Once conÂstrucÂtion finalÂly startÂed in late April, it has been a slow, often painful expeÂriÂence for downÂtown shopÂpers, and parÂticÂuÂlarÂly for busiÂness owners.
But over the last month or so, as work finalÂly startÂed to wind down and the final prodÂuct began to take shape, I have seen a much more posÂiÂtive vibe downÂtown. Now that folks can see what the finÂished project looks like, it seems a new optiÂmism and exciteÂment are swirling about on Main Street.
This afterÂnoon, I took a walk downÂtown and also viewed the progress from the roof of our office in the hisÂtoric McEldowney Building. Although much of the hardÂscape has been in place for months, it seems the final touches—particularly the beauÂtiÂful black-iron railings—are what bring it all to life for me.

It was touch-and-go on Main Street today as the street was being blackÂtopped. The street was closed in segÂments while interÂsecÂtions were paved. Paving should be finÂished this afterÂnoon or tomorrow.
According to the latÂest update from the city, the final brickÂwork will take place earÂly next week, along with the remainÂing stripÂing, includÂing parkÂing spaces and direcÂtionÂal arrows.
Next will come the final touchÂes: new trash cans, benchÂes, and flower boxÂes. Although not statÂed in the update, I assume this will also include reinÂstalling the white globes on the decÂoÂraÂtive lamp posts and relightÂing them, as well as installing decÂoÂraÂtive covÂers for the drain pipes in the high side walls.
The city says at least one lane of Main Street will be open at all times tomorÂrow as stripÂing takes place, though it appears the yelÂlow stripÂing has already been comÂpletÂed. Parking spaces and direcÂtionÂal arrows will be paintÂed next week.

The final step will be creÂatÂing a punch list of things that need to be corÂrectÂed or comÂpletÂed. Assuming that goes well, the project is expectÂed to be comÂpletÂed by December 1, just in time for the Christmas parade and holÂiÂday shopÂping. Won’t that be nice?
Until then, know that downÂtown is still open and easy pedesÂtriÂan access is availÂable to all shops on Main Street. Tomorrow and Saturday, downÂtown will host the Holiday Open House. Many merÂchants are offerÂing sales, speÂcial events, and more this weekend.
This event kicks off the holÂiÂday shopÂping seaÂson, which many downÂtown shopÂkeepÂers rely on to turn a profit—some stores genÂerÂate half or more of their annuÂal revÂenue durÂing the weeks leadÂing up to Christmas. Let’s turn out and supÂport them; they have endured a rough year for the sake of their own liveliÂhoods and for our town.
